is usually a month of catching chicken halibut, lings and silver salmon.
If today was any indication of the month’s fishing, then things might be a
little different this year. We caught the largest halibut ever to grace the
decks of any of my boats today – a 330 pound monster, as well as several others
over a hundred, including one at a 179 pounds.
I have released over a dozen huge halibut over the last two
years. This one was taken and killed at the fishermen’s request. He has fished
with me for many years and this fish was the largest he had ever seen.
The fish bit on a 500 gram Butterfly Jig that was given to me the day before by
a So Cal fishermen. The fish was hooked and landed using an Accurate 270,
spooled with 40 pound Stren Super braid with a 60 pound mono top shot of
Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon. The reel was on a custom G.Loomis Bucara blank
built by Alibi Custom Rods in Santa Cruz. It took over 60 minutes to bring
the fish to the boat. Tremendous effort from the fishermen . Since there
were multiple hook ups, the fisherman was left on his own to pull on the fish.
Fish of a lifetime!
